What's the difference between .com, .net, and .org domain names?

Monday, May 2, 2022 website domain names

So you finally decided to follow your dream and start your online business. You have done your research and have chosen a good product to sell to potential consumers and have secured a name for your LLC.

Now it is time to get started on building a website. But before you do you need to choose a domain name. How do you choose the right one and what is the difference between them?

There are 3 Top Level Domains (TLDs) to choose from. They are .com, .net, and .org.

A .com domain stands for commercial. It is meant for businesses who want to promote their services and products online. A .net domain stands for network. It is meant for companies involved in networking technologies like internet service providers. A .org domain name stands for organization. It is meant for companies that originally did not fit in the other two categories.

So how do your choose which is right for you?

My recommendation is to always go for a .com domain name first. Most people when they think of the internet and websites associate a legitimate business with a .com domain name. The problem with .com domains is the limited amount of shorter domains available.

If you can't find a .com domain name I would then look for one with a .net domain name. This is the second most popular domain name worldwide.

When it comes to .org domain names this domain name has changed somewhat from its original intended purpose. Today it is synonymous with non-profit organizations.

The good news is that back in 2014 generic top-level domains exploded onto the scene and there are over hundreds to choose from for your new business venture.

You may be nervous about using a different domain name because you think it will negatively affect your SEO. Nothing could be further from the truth. John Mueller from Google has said over and over again that “The newer top-level domains (TLDs) are equivalent to other generic top-level domains like .com when it comes to SEO. Pick something you like, there are lots of options out there now.”

There are tons of reasons to go after a particular domain name but SEO should not be a determining factor.

So what is the best place to search for a domain name for your new business website? The best to find a domain at an affordable price is www.namecheap.com.

They have a feature I love to use which is called beast mode. It allows you to choose from over 520 domain names, from various price levels, and with transformation hacks.

Now that you know what difference between domain names go have fun, search for that domain name that will fit your business, and started building that website.
